STHE CONSCIENCE LAWS AND HEALTHCARE CONFERENCE, SATURDSAY 25TH JULY 2009

The Conscience Laws and Healthcare Conference was held on Saturday 25th July 2009. The event was organised by Doctors in Conscience in order to examine the implications The Victorian Abortion Law Reform Act 2008 will have on the practice of healthcare for conscience objectors.

The conference also considered the threat that anti-conscience laws pose to the freedom of thought, conscience and religion from a cultural, political and legal perspective.

In this video, Julian McGauran speaks on the topic - The Coercion of Conscience: A Federal Political Response.
Senator McGauran is a member of the Liberal Party and a federal senator for Victoria.

 

In this video, Nigel Preston speaks on the topic- The Victorian Abortion Law and Conscientious Healthworkers: Is there a way out or do we need a test case?

Mr Preston is the lead lawyer for DLA Phillips Fox’s health, commercial and consulting group in Melbourne. He leads a team of lawyers covering the health and aged care sectors and provided a recent legal opinion to CHA regarding the implications of the Victorian abortion legislation.

 

In this video, Martin Laverty speaks on the topic- The Victorian Abortion Law and the threat to religious affiliated healthcare.

Mr Laverty is the CEO of Catholic Health Australia. Before coming to CHA in 2008, Martin worked in the government, not-for-profit, and commercial sectors as an advocate for policy change, operating his own government policy consultancy advising clients in Australia and internationally on health, education, social and economic policy change.

 

In this video, Francis Sullivan speaks on the topic- Freedom of Conscience and Good Medical Practice: The AMA's position.

Mr Sullivan is the Secretary General of the Federal AMA and a consulter to the Pontifical Council for Health Care. He holds a Masters degree in theology from Loyola University in Chicago, and a Bachelors degree in politics from Curtin University in Western Australia.

 

In this video, Dr Lachlan Dunjey speaks on the topic- The Coercion of Doctors: What is happening to modern medicine?
Dr Dunjey is the convenor of Medicine With Morality. A Perth GP, he has been active for two decades in ethical and moral issues particularly involving the intrinsic value of human life.

In 2006 he set up Medicine With Morality, an organisation uniting doctors across Australia to lobby members of parliament on life issues including human cloning, euthanasia, abortion and the right to practice medicine according to conscience.
